ABOUT Lasik Eye Treatment
Eye defects called fracture flaws, which require glasses or lenses to be used can be treated with laser technology. This technology is implemented using LASIK, LASEK, and Wavefront methods.
LASIK Eye Treatment Method
Removal of eye defects with the LASIK method starts with numbing the transparent part of the cornea, which is the outermost part of the eye. 1-2 drops of medication are being used; thus, the patient is prevented from suffering pain during treatment.
A thin cover is removed from the transparent layer through an automatic device called Keratom. The labyrinth, which corrects the fracture defect, is applied to the plate beneath the raised cover. The cover is placed. Then the process is finished.
LASIK treatment lasts 2-3 minutes for each eye. This procedure does not require hospitalization. After the procedure, the patient is checked up by the doctor and sent home with his eyes open. After treatment, the patient may experience blurred vision, stinging, watery eyes, and mild pain for up to 5-6 hours.
The extent of eyebrows is more important than the patient's eye for LASIK treatment. For the treatment, the transparent layer thickness is applied to the laser within the safety limits.
In some special cases, we call keratoconus, which is stuck in a transparent layer, LASIK procedure should not be done even if the thickness is sufficient. Because, at the early stage of the disease, the diagnosis can be avoided by standard devices.
For such patients, advanced imaging systems that can display the back of the transparent layer and provide early detection of keratoconus should be used.
The size of the eye is measured before the treatment in patients who are to be treated with LASIK. Night vision problems can arise after LASIK, which is standardized for patients with a wide range of eye diseases.
For these patients, besides standard LASIK therapy, the choice of tailor-made laser therapy based on wavefront measurement is more appropriate.
Since most LASIK patients have high myopia, the nerve layer behind the eye that we call the retina needs to be examined thoroughly before surgery. It determines the shape of the given application obtained from this examination.
Suppose there is a significant hole, tear, or degeneration in the nerve plate. In that case, we have to weld to this region with another laser called argon laser before LASIK. In this case, LASIK is applied one month after the welding process.
LASIK treatment should not be done for patients with eye disorders, cataracts, intraocular inflammation, and other eye diseases.
It is also important that contact lenses should not be worn before LASIK. Patients using soft lenses should not wear lenses for at least one week, and hard lenses should wear lenses for at least two weeks.
After the operation, one week of medication is sufficient. Eyes should be kept away from water, and eye rubbing for at least one month is not allowed. With the use of sunglasses after treatment, complaints such as glare and irritation are minimized.
Success at LASIK Eye Treatment
LASIK treatment can provide satisfactory success in myopia and astigmatism and can correct a certain degree of hypermetropia. If the patient's eye structure is appropriate, correction can be made up to 10 in myopia. Up to 4 in mixed astigmatism and 4 in hypermetropia can be achieved.
LASIK treatment is applied externally. As with any medical treatment, there are some risks in LASIK treatment. There may be some problems during the removal of the lid from the transparent layer, and problems such as infection, allergy, and inadequate leveling can be seen after the treatment.
These problems are directly linked to the quality of the physician and laser device used in LASIK treatment. After a LASIK treatment administered by an inexperienced physician, there is a high likelihood of encountering distress.
There are dozens of devices used for laser treatment on the market. Among these, if the treatment is not performed well and the treatment is old, unexpected negative results can occur. On the other hand, the fact that the laser device is very new or a device that is marketed as a high-tech product can be the cause of trouble.
A laser device that has recently been introduced into the market and has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can be advertised as a high-quality device with commercial support. Therefore, the fact that the laser device to be treated is FDA approval is also of special importance.
The most important advantage of LASIK treatment is the degree of healing and the comfort that it provides for the patients. For patients with appropriate eye structure, the LASIK method can effectively correct even the high spectacle grades.
Recovery is extremely rapid, and within hours after the treatment, the patient can have a quality vision. Pain, irritation, and stinging problems pass within 5-6 hours. One week of medication is sufficient after the treatment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Many patients may feel a slight discomfort. After 1 day from LASIK, many patients can easily begin their normal daily activities.
A few simple limitations can be suggested to help your eyes heal.
Don’t scrub your eyes for about 3 weeks.
2 weeks do not make eye makeup.
Do not enter the pool, the sea and the spa for 1 week.
If you're playing sports, you can use your eye protection caps to protect your eyes.
Having healthy corneal and being over 18 years old are the most important criteria in LASIK application. If your prescriptions for glasses have changed significantly in recent years, you may not be a good candidate for LASIK if it is a disease that requires medical treatment.
